If you’ve never been to Puerto Rico or even considered going, why not put it on your, “places to see” list? If you want a quick and easy trip to the Caribbean and you just happen to be a foodie, then this is a match made in heaven. Puerto Rico hosts the most exquisite culinary event known as Saborea. During this food-lovers’ festival, you get to experience tasty treats from well-known culinary experts, while soaking in the flavor of Puerto Rico.
What is Saborea?
Every spring, Puerto Rico is the host to a food festival known as Saborea for many years now. Saborea is a place for the top local and even international culinary experts to show off their skills. For you, it is an opportunity to partake in those tastings throughout your visit. You get to experience all the flavor that is Puerto Rico as well as other cultures in a few short days packed with dozens of restaurant tastings, expert chef creations, and plenty of rum to taste as well.
Even if You Missed Saborea
You can experience all the tastings of fine food – both from Puerto Rico and elsewhere in the world – and enjoy fine spirits, as well. However, one of the most enjoyable treats while partaking in Saborea is the extent and detail in which chefs and restaurants take to provide you with demonstrations on how to prepare these foods.
Imagine learning some of the skills and discovering which ingredients go with which dish. Puerto Rico is full of passion and this shows up in the flavors of all that is Saborea.
Here are some of the top foods showcased in years past at Saborea:
Arroz con Pollo Risotto – The taste of Italy meets a Puerto Rican tradition with this dish. Taking the traditional ingredients of chicken and rice with spices such as cumin, cilantro and adding soffrito and combining it with a cheesy taste-indulgent risotto is one way to kick up dinner at your home.
Ceviche – If you are at all familiar with ceviche, you know that the basis is of raw, chopped fish with lime and peppers. This dish is potentially easy enough to make on your own. At Saborea 2015, however, there was a twist – adding coconut, mango and ginger. The possibilities are endless.
The Taste of the Sea – Seared Tuna – What would a festival overlooking the ocean be without plenty of seafood? Seared tuna with miso puree is a great way to honor the sea. Of course, fried shrimp and rice and beans are another favorite, with a variety of shrimp recipes both sweet and sour always available too. Halibut, black Chilean sea bass, Caribbean lobster tail, are all past stars of the festival of Saborea.
Mofongo – While the name may not sound appealing, you can expect to find Mofongo as part of Puerto Rican fare. The basis of Mofongo is the boiled and mashed green plantain and from there anything is possible. Add seafood or meat and veggies according to your personal taste buds desire.
Once you get a taste and feel for the culinary delights from Puerto Rico, you will surely want to visit there in person – especially during the festival of Saborea.
